Most people have been stacking firewood for years but you would be surprised at how many literally do not know how to properly stack firewood.  Stacking firewood is simple however, there are some important facts which you must know in keeping this process simple while maintaining quality wood for your fireplace or wood burning stove.

The first thing

You must do is choose the best location for your wood.  If you have not seasoned your firewood yet, you want to stack your wood outdoors while allowing the sun to dry out the wood.  This should be performed during the summer months.  I would not recommend stacking the wood up against your home or in a shed or under a tree.  You want the sun to shine on the wood which is very important in drying out your wood.

If your wood is already dry, you can place the wood in a shed or a covered area but anywhere is possible as long as the area is dry.  You also want the wood in an area which will allow for proper air ventilation which will aid with getting the moisture out of the wood.

You want to keep your wood pile away from the ground

The reasoning for this is because wood placed directly on the ground will cause mold and this proves messy.  If you are stacking your wood on the ground anyways, make sure you place something on the ground first before you stack your wood.

Stack the wood while fitting them together as tightly as possible.  Make sure you pay attention to the way you stack your wood.  You want to stack the wood in a vertical manner which is not leaning.  You can lean the wood away from the sun in a slight manner for this will aid your wood in drying faster.

You do not want to stack your wood too high.  Typically four feet or lower is perfect for the height of the piles needed.  You want to ensure that the wood has a few inches of space between them.  You want to use this method for air ventilation.  Stacking firewood is easy as long as you utilize these simple methods as well as tips.
